RAIN or Shine coach Yeng Guiao sees drawbacks in the PBA introducing a four-point shot, although he admitted he isn’t totally against the idea.

The PBA is set to adopt a four-point shot for the coming 49th season of the league for shots taken beyond an arc 27 feet away from the basket.

The league previously included a four-point shot during the past two PBA All-Star Games, but it will now be implemented in official games.

Guiao believes the league didn’t allot enough time to study the four-point shot and how it will affect the league’s games. The league board agreed to adopt the four-point shot during its planning session in Osaka a few days ago.

“It’s a novel idea but I don’t think we’ve put enough time and thought into it to fully grasp its longer term effects on the game,” said Guiao in a message to SPIN.ph on Tuesday when asked for his reaction.

By being the first league to implement a four-point shot, Guiao said there is a risk of the new rule will put the PBA in a bad light.

“We will be the first in the world to this. The NBA deferred its decision on this because of the objections of some coaches. We are either going to look like geniuses or maybe if it doesn’t work out well, idiots,” said one of the most outspoken coaches in the league.

At the same time, however, Guiao said he is giving the four-point shot a chance as it will definitely bring a different flavor to the game.

Guiao: ‘I like taking risks’

“But I like taking risks so let’s enjoy an interesting season,” said Guiao, whose system also gives even big men the green light to shoot the outside shot- so long as they’re open.

Guiao experienced coaching in a game with a four-point shot, being the mentor of Team Scottie during the 2023 All-Star Game in Passi, Iloilo.

In that game, Team Scottie lost to Team Japeth, 140-136, with Paul Lee of Magnolia winning the All-Star MVP after making 7 of his 13 four-point shots
