VETERAN shooting guard Jeff Chan has parted ways with Northport weeks before the PBA’s 49th season which opens three weeks from now.

Chan’s contract was no longer renewed by the Batang Pier, who were one of the busiest teams in an off-season that saw the franchise trade away upcoming sophomore Zavier Lucero to Magnolia for Jio Jalalon and Abu Tratter.

Both team governor Eric Arejola and coach Bonnie Tan confirmed the team’s decision to let go the six-time champion.

Northport also dealt away Ben Adamos to Barangay Ginebra for Sidney Onwubere and Brent Paraiso to Terrafirma for the Dyip’s second round pick in Season 51.

The 41-year-old Chan, one of the best long-range shooters in PBA history, has been bothered by a minor calf injury last season, but was activated by Northport in the latter part of the Philippine Cup after JM Calma got injured.

The former FEU star averaged 5.7 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists during the All-Filipino conference, and played his final game for the Batang Pier in a 104-96 loss to Terrafirma in a playoff for the eighth and last quarterfinal spot.

The Gilas Pilipinas great was acquired by Northport in a trade with Ginebra two years ago in a three-team trade that centers on Jamie Malonzo and Arvin Tolentino.

Chan was a second round pick (No. 17 overall) by Barako Bull in the 2008 draft. He played for a year with the Energy Boosters, before landing at Rain or Shine, where his stars shone in the league.

He also briefly played for Phoenix.

Asked about his next career move, Chan was mum on the matter.
